Defragmentation, on the other hand is the process of scanning the fi le system and
putting the fragments of the fi le together. It loads the fragments of the fi le and saves
them in consecutive parts of the storage which is time consuming. However, it enhances

the performance of the computer. Defragmentation takes place on a scheduled basis
but it can also be done manually.

Follow these steps to defragment the disk.
1. Click on the Start button and select the Windows

Administrative Tools.

2. Select the Defragment and Optimise Drives option.
3. You will see the ‘Optimise Drives’ window. Step 2

4. Select the disk to be defragmented under the ‘Drive’

column in the ‘Status’ section.
5. Click on the Optimise button. This will start the

defragmentation process which takes a few minutes Step 1
to complete.
