P. 55
Example 18: A library has 2,575 books. 28 books are kept in each shelf. Estimate how many
shelves will be required to keep all the books.
Estimated division
Solution: Total number of books in the library = 2,575
86
Number of books kept in one shelf = 28
30 2580
Round off 2,575 and 28 to the nearest 10. – 240
2,575 2,580 (Rounded off to the nearest 10) 180
28 30 (Rounded off to the nearest 10) – 180
Now, divide 2,580 by 30. 000
Thus, about 86 shelves will be required to keep all the books. So, the estimated
quotient is 86.
Word Problems on Division
Example 19: There are 1,560 chocolates in 12 boxes. How many chocolates
Calculation
are there in each box?
130
Solution: Total chocolates in 12 boxes = 1,560 12 1560
– 12
Number of chocolates in 1 box = 1,560 ÷ 12 = 130
36
So, there are 130 chocolates in each box. – 36
000
– 0

Example 20: The product of two numbers is 4,816. If one of the numbers is 16, Calculation
find the other number. 301
Solution: Product of two numbers = 4,816 16 4816
– 48
One number = 16 001
Other number = 4,816 ÷ 16 = 301 – 0
16
So, the other number is 301.
– 16
0
Example 21: A baker bakes 876 cookies in a day and packs them in boxes. Each box can have 45
cookies in it. How many boxes will the baker need to pack all the cookies?
Solution: Number of cookies baked by the baker in 1 day = 876 Calculation
Number of cookies packed by him in 1 box = 45 19
45 876
Number of boxes needed to pack all the cookies
– 45
= 876 45 = 19, remainder = 21 426
As remainder = 21, so 21 cookies will be left over. – 405
21
So, the baker will need 19 + 1 = 20 boxes to pack all the cookies.
