Framing Word Problems on Multiplication

Example 12: Frame two word problems for 2,500 × 31.

Solution: 1. There are 2,500 flowers in a garden. If there are 31 such gardens, then how
many flowers are there in all?
                                  2. Amaya gets paid ` 2,500 per day for her work. How much money will she earn
                                     for 31 days?

                               Exercise 4.2

                      1. Estimate the following products by rounding off each number to the nearest 10.

                            (a) 3,582 × 27 (b) 6,517 × 141 (c) 5,297 × 1,031
                           (d) 1,010 × 561 (e) 1,175 × 2,087 (f) 6,975 × 28

                      2. Solve the following word problems.
                            (a) There are 48 chocolates in a box. How many chocolates will be there in 8,265 such
                                boxes?

                           (b) A factory manufactures 275 T-shirts in a day. How many T-shirts will the factory
                                manufacture in 365 days?
                            (c) What will be the cost of 25 laptops, if one laptop costs ` 35,540?
                           (d) A carton contains 1,756 pencils. How many pencils will be there in 1,200 such
                                cartons?

                            (e) If a box of sweets contains 15 pieces of sweets in it, then how many sweets will be
                                there in 475 such boxes?
                            (f) If an AC bus ticket costs ` 2,500 from Mumbai to Bengaluru, what will be the cost of
                                20 such bus tickets?

                      3. Frame two word problems for the following. Also, solve to find the product.

                            (a) 6,923 × 412 (b) 2,165 × 75
                            (c) 4,306 × 22 (d) 9,132 5 87
                            (e) 5,416 × 56 (f) 3,000 × 365

                    Division

Division means repeated subtraction or distribution of a whole into equal quantities or in equal
number of parts or groups. It is the opposite of multiplication.
In division, the dividend is divided by the divisor to obtain the answer. The answer obtained is
called quotient and in some cases, we get a left over number after dividing. The number that is
left after division is called remainder.
We have already learnt division of 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number in the previous
class. Now let’s learn division of 3-digit and 4-digit numbers by a 2-digit number.
