P. 53
Example 16: Divide the following.
(a) 6,300 by 500 (b) 43,900 by 6,000
Solution: (a) 6,300 ÷ 500 (b) 43,900 ÷ 6,000
Dividend = 6,300 Dividend = 43,900
Divisor = 500 Divisor = 6,000
Divide 63 by 5. Divide 439 by 60.
1 2 7
5 6 3 60 4 3 9
– 5 – 4 2 0
1 3 1 9
– 1 0
3 So, 43,900 ÷ 6,000 = 7 and
remainder = 1,900.
So, 6,300 500 = 12 and
remainder = 300.
Division by Breaking a Number and then Dividing
We know how to divide numbers using standard algorithm. Now let’s learn another way of
dividing large numbers like breaking the dividend and then dividing each number by the divisor.
For example, if we have to divide 8,750 by 25 using this method, we need to first expand or break
the dividend and then divide each of them with the divisor separately. Look at the steps given
below carefully.
Step 1: Write the dividend in the expanded form as shown.
8,750 = 8,000 + 700 + 50
Step 2: Divide each number of the expanded form of the dividend by 25.
8,000 25 = 320 700 25 = 28 50 25 = 2
Step 3: Add all the quotients obtained in step 2 to obtain the final quotient.
320 + 28 + 2 = 350
Step 4: Check the answer by carrying out standard algorithm or long division.
