JO : (dancing) She took it out a minute ago and went off to put a
ribbon on it.
BETH : How nice my handkerchiefs look, don’t they? Hannah washed
and ironed them for me and I stitched them all myself.
JO : (taking a handkerchief ) She’s put ‘Mother’ on them instead of ‘M.
March’. How funny!
BETH : Isn’t that right? I thought it was better to mark ‘Mother’ because
5
Meg’s initials are ‘M.M.’ too. I don’t want anyone to use these
except Mother.
MEG : (to Beth) It’s all right, dear, and a very pretty idea. It will please
her very much, I know.
A noise is heard at the door.
JO : I think it’s Mother. Hide the basket, quick!
Amy enters.
MEG : Where have you been,
and what are you hiding
behind you?
AMY : Don’t laugh at me, Jo!
I didn’t want anyone to
know till the time was
right. I wanted to change
the little bottle of cologne
for a bigger one and I
gave all my money to get
it. I’m trying not to be
selfish any more.
NARRATOR : Amy showed them the
big flask of cologne. Her
sisters were so proud
of her that Meg hugged her immediately and Beth got her a
beautiful rose to decorate the bottle.
A noise is heard at the door again. The girls hide the basket under the sofa and sit at the breakfast
table.
