MEG : Girls, Mother wants us to read and love these books and we
must begin at once. We used to be faithful about it, but since
Father went away and this war trouble has disturbed us, we
have been neglecting many things. You can do as you please,

but I shall keep my book on the table here and read a little
every morning as soon as I wake up.

Meg begins to read as Jo puts her arm around her and leaning cheek to cheek starts to read with her.

BETH : (whispers to Amy) Look how good Meg is! Come Amy, let us
read our books. I’ll help you with the difficult words and they’ll
explain the things we don’t understand.

AMY : I’m glad mine is blue.

Half an hour later, Meg and Jo come downstairs to thank their mother for the gifts.

MEG : Where is Mother, Hannah?

HANNAH : Goodness only knows. Some poor creature came begging and
your mother went straight off to see what was needed.

MEG : She will be back soon, I think, so please fry your cakes and get
everything ready. (Looks at the basket of gifts kept under the sofa for
                                                                                                          4
