Appreciation
Read the following lines from the poem. Pay attention to the highlighted words.
And little Wilhelmine looks up
With wonder-waiting eyes;
The words with, wonder and waiting begin with the same sound. This is an example of
alliteration. Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sound in the beginning of
words that are close together. It is mostly used for the appealing effect that these sounds
create when read together. Look at another example of alliteration.
Down the slippery slide they slid
Sitting slightly sideways;
Slipping swiftly see them skid
On holidays and Fridays.
Note that most of the tongue twisters are actually alliterations. However, you must
remember that alliterations are words that begin with the same sounds and not always with
the same letters. For example, Cheshire cat is not an example of alliteration although both
words begin with c.
Find fi ve more examples of allitera on. Write them in your notebook. Now, try
saying them without mispronouncing the words. Play this game with your friends.
