19 A Merry Christmas
Has it ever happened that you really wanted something but gave it away to someone who
probably needed it more than you? How did you feel after you shared? Did it make you happy
or sad? Speak about your experience in class.
The following play is adapted from the novel Little Women. It is the story of four sisters
who live with their mother. Mr March, their father, is away serving as a priest in the war. The
events of this play happen on Christmas morning. The girls have very little money and so they
cannot afford rich presents. However, they have very rich hearts as you will see when you read
the play.

MEG: Margaret, the eldest daughter of the March family
JO: Josephine, the second daughter
BETH: Elizabeth, the third daughter
AMY: the youngest daughter
MRS MARCH: the girls’ mother
HANNAH: the help at the March household
A poor woman and her children: neighbours of the March family
NARRATOR : Jo was the first one to wake up on Christmas morning. For a

moment she felt disappointed as there were no goodies . Then
she remembered her mother’s promise, and slipping her hand

under her pillow, drew out a little crimson -coloured book.
JO : Merry Christmas, Meg! Look under your pillow.

Meg, Beth and Amy each find a book, green, dove and blue coloured respectively, with a few
words written by their mother.
