                     Students will be able to
                                                                                               • Properties of Matter
                   • discuss the proper es of solids, liquids and gases.
                   • classify ma er into solid, liquid and gas. • States of Matter
                                                                                               • Explanation for the
                   • discuss the interconversion of one state of ma er into another.
                                                                                                  Existence of Three States
                   • explain the eff ect of heat on ma er showing change of state, expansion of Matter

                                                            Warm Up Activity

Name any ten things that you use in your daily life. Classify them as solid, liquid or gas. Describe the things in
                   one line.
                                              Thing Solid/Liquid/Gas Descrip on

                                      1.

                                      2.
                                      3.

                                      4.

When we look around, we fi nd ourselves surrounded by a
lot of things. We can touch things like trees and things like
air that cannot be touched. All these things have diff erent
proper es and are diff erent from each other. However, they
all have one common thing. They all are made up of ma er.
Ma er is anything that occupies space and has mass. All
substances whether living or non-living are composed of
ma er. Everything in the universe is composed of ma er.
Ma er is composed of extremely small par cles and it
exists in both natural and man-made states.
Fig. 3.1: Everything is made up of matter.
In this chapter, we will study about ma er in detail.
