P. 86

Example 8: Find 197 ÷ 4.

            Solution: 3 Step 1: 19 ÷ 4 = 4, remainder = 3

                            4 197 Step 2: 37 ÷ 4 = 9, remainder = 1

                               49 1
Example 9: Divide 6,942 by 5 using both long and short division methods.
            Solution: 1388 1 4 4
                             5 6942 5 6 9 4 2
                              – 5 1 3 8 8 2
                               19
                              – 15

                                 44
                               – 40
                                   42
                                 – 40
2 So, the quotient is 1,388 and the remainder is 2.

                                                      EXERCISE 6.3

              1. Divide using the short division method.

                  (a) 7,894 ÷ 9 (b) 9,684 ÷ 12 (c) 2,075 ÷ 8 (d) 3,120 ÷ 10
              2. Divide using both long and short division methods.

                  (a) 7,642 ÷ 8 (b) 6,873 ÷ 9 (c) 5,486 ÷ 13 (d) 7,048 ÷ 11

            Division of a Number by 10, 100 and 1,000

                • To divide a number by 10, write the ones digit of the number as remainder and the
                  other remaining digits as quotient.
                   For example, 8 2 6 ÷ 10

                               Quotient Remainder (ones digit)
                           (remaining digits)
Thus, the quotient is 82 and the remainder is 6.

                • To divide a number by 100, write the number formed by the tens and ones digits as
remainder and the other remaining digits as quotient.
                   For example, 2 7 1 4 ÷ 100

Quotient Remainder (tens and ones digits)
                           (remaining digits)

Thus, the quotient is 27 and the remainder is 14.
