EXERCISE 6.1
Divide and check your answer.
(a) 259 by 6 (b) 308 by 3 (c) 790 by 8 (d) 926 by 7
(e) 1,175 by 5 (f) 2,048 by 9 (g) 3,168 by 4 (h) 6,008 by 2
(i) 6,850 by 7 (j) 7,205 by 6 (k) 8,917 by 9 (l) 9,023 by 4
Division by a 2-Digit Number up to 20
Example 3: Divide 249 by 14 and check your answer.
1
Solution: 14 249 Step 1: Consider the first two digits of the dividend. The
– 14 number is 24.
10 Since 24 > 14, we will divide.
From the multiplication table of 14, we know that
14 × 1 = 14, which is less than 24.
Write 1 in the tens place of the quotient.
17 24 – 14 = 10
14 249 Step 2: Bring down 9 ones of the dividend.
– 14 14 × 7 = 98
109 14 × 8 = 112 > 109 → division is not possible
– 98 Write 7 in the ones place of the quotient.
11 109 – 98 = 11
So, the quotient is 17 and the remainder is 11.
Check: 249 ÷ 14 = 17, remainder = 11
(Divisor × Quotient) + Remainder Mental Maths
= (14 × 17) + 11 = 238 + 11 Divide
= 249 = Dividend (a) 112 by 14 (b) 104 by 13
Thus, the division is correct. (c) 84 by 12 (d) 105 by 15
Division by a 2-Digit Number More Than 20
Example 4: Divide 4,984 by 27 and check your answer.
Solution: 1 Step 1: Consider 49. Since 49 > 27, we will divide.
27 4984 To find the quotient, consider the first digit of the
– 27 dividend and the divisor.
22 4 ÷ 2 = 2. Thus, the quotient can be 2.
To check, multiply 27 by 2.
