• To divide a number by 1,000, write the number formed by the hundreds, tens and
ones digits as remainder and the remaining digits as quotient.
For example, 3 8 0 7 ÷ 1,000 Mental Maths
(a) 288 ÷ 10
Quotient Remainder (hundred, tens and ones digits) (b) 8,942 ÷ 10
(remaining digits) (c) 6,075 ÷ 100
Thus, the quotient is 3 and the remainder is 807. (d) 9,090 ÷ 100
Quick Tip
To divide a number by 10, 100, 1,000 and so on, count the number
of zeros that follow 1. The remainder is the number formed by
the digits equal to the number of zeros, starting from the
ones place and moving left. The remaining digits form the
quotient.
Division When Dividend and Divisor end With Zero(s)
When the dividend and divisor both end with zero(s), cancel the common number of zeros
from both and then divide. This is called the cancellation method.
Example 10: 350 ÷ 20 = ?
Solution: Dividend = 350, Divisor = 20 Step 1: Cancel the common number of zeros
from the right.
17 Step 2: Divide 35 by 2.
2 35 Dividend = 35, divisor = 2, remainder = 1
– 2
Step 3: Add the common number of zeros back
15 to the remainder to get the answer.
– 14
1
Thus, the quotient is 17 and the remainder is 10.
Alternatively,
Directly divide 350 by 20 as you divide any number by a 2-digit number.
