Solving Word Problems
Example 15: There are 780 calories in 6 chocolate bars. How many calories are there in
each bar?
Solution: Total calories in 6 chocolate bars = 780 130
Number of calories in 1 chocolate bar = 780 ÷ 6 6 780
= 130 – 6
So, there are 130 calories in each bar. 18

other number. 601
Solution: Product of two numbers = 4,808 8 4808
One number = 8 – 48
The other number = 4,808 ÷ 8 = 601 0
So, the other number is 601. – 0

Example 17: A baker makes 876 cookies in a day. He packs them in boxes each of which
can have 45 cookies. How many boxes will be needed to pack all the cookies?
19
Solution: Number of cookies = 876 45 876
Number of boxes needed = 876 ÷ 45 – 45
As remainder = 21, so 21 cookies will be left over. 426
Thus, 19 + 1 = 20 boxes will be needed to pack all the cookies. – 405

Framing Word Problems
Example 18: Frame a word problem for 1,250 ÷ 5 and solve it.
250
Solution: 5 school bags cost ` 1,250. How much will each bag cost? 5 1250
Cost of 5 bags = ` 1,250 – 10
