Division of a 4-Digit Number by a 1-Digit Number
Start from the thousands digit of the d ividend and continue in the same manner as you
divide a 3-digit number.
Example 1: For a test match, 4,785 tickets were sold in 5 days. If on each day, the same
number of tickets were sold, how many tickets were sold in 1 day?
Solution: 4,785 ÷ 5
957
5 4785 Remember
– 45 The remainder should
028 always be less than the
divisor.
– 25
035
– 35
00
So, 957 tickets were sold in one day.
Check: 4,785 ÷ 5 = 957
(Divisor × Quotient) + Remainder
= (5 × 957) + 0 = 4,785 + 0 = 4,785
= Dividend
Thus, the division is correct.
Example 2: Divide 9,427 by 6 and check your answer.
Solution: 1571
6 9427 Remember
– 6
Keep on dividing till all
34 digits in the dividend are
– 30 finished.
42
– 42
07
– 6
1
Check: 9,427 ÷ 6 = 1,571, remainder = 1
(Divisor × Quotient) + Remainder
= (6 × 1,571) + 1 = 9,426 + 1 = 9,427
= Dividend
Thus, the division is correct.
