                    Pattern of Numbers

                         Unit of repeat
To extend a repeating pattern we follow the given steps.

Step 1: Observe the given pattern and identify the unit of repeat in it.

Step 2: Next identify if there are any similarities or differences in the given pattern, for example,
                             rotation of shapes or objects.
Step 3: Compare and identify the different characteristics (shape, size, colour and position) by
seeing the relationship between 3 or 4 consecutive numbers or shapes and then extend
                             the pattern.
Patterns can also be made by rotating a shape or an object.

We know that shapes or objects can be rotated by turning them around their centre. These turns
can be quarter turn, half turn, three-fourths turn or full turn. Also, these turns are made in a
particular direction, i.e., clockwise or anticlockwise. Let’s consider an example to understand this.

Look at the pattern made by keys below.

The given pattern of keys shows a quarter turn, i.e., 90° in an anticlockwise direction.

                              Exercise 15.1

                      1. Observe the given patterns carefully, identify the unit of repeat and extend them.

                           (a) (b)

                            (c) (d)

                           (e) (f)

                                                                                                                        195
