                                         Some Properties of Water

Water is the most abundant and precious KEY CONCEPTS

substance on the earth. It is found in water-
                                                                                   • Some properties of water
bodies such as oceans, seas, rivers, streams,
                                                                                   • Water solution
lakes, ponds, and even under the ground. All
                                                                                   • Soluble and insoluble substances
living things need water to live and do many • Objects that fl oat and sink in

                    activities. water

We already know that water is a liquid, and it
has no colour, taste, smell or shape. It can change its form and exist in all the three

forms on the earth. Let’s learn more about the properties of water.

                    Some Properties of Water

Water has a fi xed volume

Though water has no fi xed shape, it has a fi xed

volume. For example, when a fi xed amount of
water is poured into another container and again

poured back into the original container, the water
will fi ll it up to the same mark. This is because

there is no change in the volume of water when
it is poured into diff erent containers of the same

                    capacity.

                                                   Water occupies space

Since water is a form of matter, it has mass and occupies

space. For example, if we take a container fi lled with a

solid to its rim and pour water into it, the excess water
will fl ow out of the container. This is because water
needs space which it does not get and so it overfl ows.
