Let’s perform the following activities to understand the conditions that aff ect
making of a solution.
ACTIVITY TIME
Stirring Aff ects Making of a Solution
Aim:
To learn how stirring aff ects making of a solution.
You Need:
A bowl of sugar, water, two beakers, a spoon/a stirrer
What to Do:
• Take a spoonful of sugar and add it to a beaker water
of water. Do not stir it. Note the time in which
the sugar dissolves completely.
• Take the same quantity of sugar and water in
another beaker. Stir it until the sugar dissolves
completely and note the time.
sugar
Observation:
You will observe that in the fi rst case, when the solution is not stirred, it takes more time
for sugar (solute) to dissolve in water (solvent). In the second case, the sugar dissolves
faster when it is stirred.
Result:
Stirring allows the solute particles to dissolve faster in water.
ACTIVITY TIME
Temperature Aff ects Making of a Solution
Aim:
To understand how temperature aff ects the making of a solution.
You Need:
Two beakers, cold and warm water, a bowl of sugar, a spoon
What to Do: warm water
• Perform this activity in pairs. cold water
• Take two beakers of the same capacity. Fill the f irst
beaker with cold water and the second one with
warm water.
• Now add one spoonful of sugar in each beaker.
Leave it until the sugar dissolves completely. Note
the time taken by the sugar to dissolve in each case. sugar
