Measuring Capacity Using Non-Standard Units
Capacity of a container is the maximum amount that it can hold. For example, the capacity
of a petrol tank is the amount of petrol the tank can hold.

We usually talk about capacity in terms of the container.

A glass of cold coffee, a bowl of soup and, a jug of water are some examples of containers.
These containers are non-standard units of measurement of capacity as they are not
always of the same shapes and sizes. Also, they do not have a scale or marking on them to
show how much they can hold.

Some non-standard units of measurement of capacity

We can use these non-standard units of measurement to measure the capacity of a bigger
object. For example, we can use cups to measure the capacity of a glass.

                                                                 =

2 cups of water = 1 glass of water

Let’s measure the capacity of a jug using different non-standard units of measurement.

                                                                         =

6 glasses of water = 1 jug of water

2 bottles of water fill the jug up to the top.

So, the capacity of the jug is 2 bottles.
