You may have noticed that a measuring tape is used to measure cloth in cloth shops. If
we observe carefully, we will see that it has 100 divisions marked at equal distances and

each division is of 1 cm. So, we can say that 1 metre is equal to 100 divisions of 1 cm
            each, i.e., 1 m = 100 cm.

We use kilometres to measure longer lengths. For example, the distance from Delhi to
Agra is measured in kilometres. It is denoted by km.

            Conversions of Length

We know that various units are used for measuring length such as metre, centimetre and
kilometre. Now let’s learn how to convert metre to centimetre and vice versa.

            Metres to Centimetres
                                                                                     Top Tip
            We know that 1 m = 100 cm. To convert m to

To convert metres to centimetres, we multiply cm, put two zeros
the number of metres by 100. to the right of the
                                                                                      number.
            Example 2: Convert 2 m to cm.

            Solution: 2 m = 2 × 100 cm = 200 cm

To convert metres and centimetres to Mental Maths
centimetres, we multiply the number of metres by Complete the following.
100 and then add the number of centimetres to it. (a) 8m 20 cm = _____ cm

            Example 3: Convert 3 m 25 cm to cm. (b) 4 m 45 cm = _____ cm
            Solution: 3 m 25 cm = (3 × 100 cm) + 25 cm (c) 16 m 25 cm = _____ cm
                                       = 300 cm + 25 cm = 325 cm

            Centimetres to Metres
            We know that 100 cm = 1 m.

When we convert centimetres to metres, the last two digits always show the number of
centimetres and the rest of the digits show the number of metres.

Example 4: Convert the following to metres: (a) 700 cm and (b) 7621 cm.
            Solution: (a) 700 cm = 7 m (b) 7621 cm = 76 m 21 cm
