You may have noticed that a measuring tape is used to measure cloth in cloth shops. If
we observe carefully, we will see that it has 100 divisions marked at equal distances and
each division is of 1 cm. So, we can say that 1 metre is equal to 100 divisions of 1 cm
each, i.e., 1 m = 100 cm.

We use kilometres to measure longer lengths. For example, the distance from Delhi to
Agra is measured in kilometres. It is denoted by km.
Conversions of Length
We know that various units are used for measuring length such as metre, centimetre and
kilometre. Now let’s learn how to convert metre to centimetre and vice versa.

Example 4: Convert the following to metres: (a) 700 cm and (b) 7621 cm.
Solution: (a) 700 cm = 7 m (b) 7621 cm = 76 m 21 cm
