6 glasses of water 2 bottles of water

Why do you think it takes only 2 bottles to fill the jug whereas it takes 6 glasses to fill the
same jug? It is because the bottles are bigger than the glasses. Thus, bigger objects are
required in a lesser number to fill a container.

            Conservation of Volume

Volume is the amount of space that a substance or an object occupies or contains.
Conservation of volume means that a given quantity of a substance will remain the same
even if the shape or form of the container changes. For example, if we pour water from
a glass into a different container, the quantity of water will remain the same. Only its
            appearance will change.

                      A B A C

Let’s perform an activity to understand conservation of volume of liquid.

              • Take two identical glasses, say A and B, and pour the same

                  amount of water in each.
                                                                                                A B

              • Take a narrow and tall glass, say glass C and pour water
from one of the glasses into it.
                                                                                           A B C

You will find that the quantity of water remains the same even after it is poured into a
glass of different shape and form. This explains conservation of volume of liquid.
