            Measuring Length Using Standard Units

            Length is a form of measurement which we use to know how long, short, tall, far, etc.,
            objects are.
            We have learnt how to use body parts to measure length. But it is not accurate as the

            length of body parts differs from person to person. To get an exact measurement, we need
            a fixed length.
            The basic unit for measuring length is metre. It is denoted by m.

            We use centimetre to measure objects of shorter lengths. For example, the length of a
            pencil box is measured in centimetres. It is denoted by cm. We use a ruler to measure
            lengths in centimetres.

            To measure lengths using a ruler, place the ruler on the object whose length is to be
            measured such that the zero marking falls on one end of the object. Read the marking on
            the ruler at the other end of the object. This gives the length of the object in centimetres.

            Example 1:  What is the length of the given pencil?
