Router

Router is a device that connects two diff erent networks such as two
diff erent LANs or a LAN and a WAN. It forwards the data packets
between computer networks. Router performs the traffi c directing
functions on the Internet. It also determines whether the source
and the destination are on the same network or whether data is to
be transferred from one network to another network.

Gateway

Gateway is a network node that connects two networks using
diff erent protocols together that is two dissimilar networks.
It allows us to carry out various activities like sending e-mail
and online shopping.

Bridge

Bridge is a product that connects LAN to another
LAN that uses the same protocol. It prevents the
unnecessary traffi c from entering the network.

Networking Terminology

Let’s get familiar with networking terminologies.

Internet

A collection of interconnected networks is called an Internetwork or Internet.

Internet is the world’s largest computer network that connects several computers of diff erent
types belonging to various networks all over the globe. Therefore, Internet is a network of
networks.

Intranet

Intranet refers to a network within an organisation which
is used to share resources such as fi les. The confi dential
information of an organisation cannot be accessed by any
outsider as it is protected by Firewall.
