Local Area Network (LAN)
LAN
Local area network (LAN) connects several
computers within a small geographical area such
as a room or building. The devices are connected
by wires. Using LAN, resources like disks, fi les,
printers, plotters, modems and software can be
easily shared among many users.
Cluster Area Network (CAN)
Cluster area network (CAN) is also known as
campus area network. It consists of small LANs
over a small geographical area such as a college.
Metropolitan Area Network
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
Metropolitan area network (MAN) is usually
confi ned to a single metropolitan city such
Public city network as cable television in a city. It has only one
or two cables and is capable of voice and
data transmission over a distance of up to
80 kilometres.
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Wide area network (WAN) connects computers across
large distances, often crossing the geographical
boundaries of cities or states, such as Internet. A WAN
consists of several LANs.
Networking devices are used to connect computers
or other devices to share the devices or data.
