Raw Data
Before representing a data in any form, it needs to be collected. This collected data is not in
any particular order and is called raw data. It is usually not easy to study raw data or draw
information from it. Thus, after collecting the data, we need to arrange it in some order so
that we can derive conclusion from it. There are various methods of arranging raw data.
Tabular form
Representation of data in a table is called tabular format. It is easy to get information and
draw conclusions from it.
Example 1: For the class party, Rashi’s group has to bring fruits for the whole class. She
collects data of the favourite fruits of her classmates as given below. Arrange
it in tabular format.
apple, banana, cherries, apple, guava, banana, orange, grapes, cherries, guava,
banana, apple, grapes, cherries, orange, guava, banana, cherries, grapes,
grapes, apple, orange, cherries, grapes, banana, orange, guava, cherries,
grapes, orange, apple, banana, grapes, cherries, grapes
Solution: The data about the favourite fruit of children of Rashi’s class is given below.
Fruit apple banana cherries guava orange grapes
Number of children 5 6 7 4 5 8
Example 2: Look at the tabular data in Example 1 and answer the following questions.
(a) Which is the most liked fruit?
(b) Name the fruit that is liked by least number of children.
(c) Which two fruits are liked by the same number of children?
(d) How many children like cherries?
(e) How many more children like grapes than bananas?
Solution: (a) Grapes is the most liked fruit.
(b) Guava is liked by the least number of children.
(c) Apples and oranges are liked by the same number of children.
(d) 7 children like cherries.
(e) (8 – 6 = 2) 2 more children like grapes better than bananas.
Pictograph
When data is represented by pictures, it is called pictograph. Let's revise the rules we follow
to draw a pictograph.
• A pictograph must have a title.
• The symbol used in the pictograph must be defined.
