Money
We have already learnt in the previous class that currency notes and coins are used while dealing
with money. We know how to convert larger units of money to smaller units and vice versa.
Let’s quickly revise the conversion of money from larger to smaller units and vice versa through
examples.
Conversion of Rupees to Paise and Vice Versa
We can convert rupees to paise and paise to rupees as follows:
1
` 1 = 100 paise and 1 paisa = `
100
• To convert rupees to paise, we multiply the given rupees by 100.
• To convert the given rupees and paise to paise, we multiply the rupees by 100 and add
paise to it.
• To convert paise to rupees, we divide the given paise by 100.
Example 12: Convert (a) ` 45.80 and (b) ` 69 to paise.
Solution: (a) ` 45.80 = (45 × 100 p) + 80 p = 4,500 p + 80 p = 4,580 p
(b) ` 69 = 69 × 100 p = 6,900 p
Example 13: Convert (a) 9,925 p and (b) 48,000 p to rupees.
9,925 48,000
Solution: (a) 9,925 p = ` = ` 99.25 (b) 48,000 p = ` = ` 480.00
100 100
Exercise 12.3
Convert the following as directed.
(a) ` 26.50 to paise (b) 9,900 p to rupees (c) 65,980 p to rupees
(d) ` 151.60 to paise (e) ` 4,980.05 to paise (f) ` 7,415.15 to paise
Addition and Subtraction of Money
We add and subtract money as we add and subtract decimal numbers. Let’s revise it with the
help of examples.
Example 14: Add ` 362.35 and ` 1,496.74.
Solution: ` p
1 1
3 6 2 . 3 5
+ 1 4 9 6 . 7 4
1 8 5 9 . 0 9
So, ` 362.35 + ` 1,496.74 = ` 1,859.09.
