Growing and reducing pa erns may not have a fi xed unit of repeat.
Rules to Extend a Growing or Reducing Pattern
There are some rules to extend a growing pa ern or reducing pa ern. Some of the rules
are men oned below.
On a number line
Skip count on a number line to extend a growing or reducing pa ern. Look at the given
number line to understand this.
5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 55 60 65 70
To extend the growing pa ern in the above number line, the rule is to start from 5 and skip
count by 10 in forward direc on. Similarly, to extend the reducing pa ern in the number
line, the rule is to start from 65 and skip count by 10 in backward direc on.

Using pictures Reducing pa ern (–1)
Look at the given pa ern of leaves to see how a pa ern grows or reduces.
Growing pa ern
Reducing pa ern
Star ng from le to right, the number of leaves is increasing by 1 while from right to le ,
the number of leaves is decreasing by 1.
