P. 17
Predecessor and Successor
A number that comes just before a given number or is one less than it is called the
predecessor of that number.
A number that comes just a er a given number or is one more than it is called the successor
of that number.
Let’s consider a 5-digit number 16,832, and fi nd its predecessor and successor.
The predecessor of 16,832 is 16,832 – 1 = 16,831 and its successor is 16,832 + 1 = 16,833.
Example 9: Find the predecessor and successor of 2,45,304.
Solu on: Predecessor of 2,45,304 = 2,45,304 – 1 = 2,45,303
Successor of 2,45,304 = 2,45,304 + 1 = 2,45,305
Ordering of Numbers
We already know that numbers can be arranged either in ascending order (smaller to
bigger) or descending order (bigger to smaller).
Example 10: Write the given numbers in ascending and descending order.
74,328; 28,537; 76,240; 3,43,200; 29,643
Solu on: Ascending order: 28,537 < 29,643 < 74,328 < 76,240 < 3,43,200
Descending order: 3,43,200 > 76,240 > 74,328 > 29,643 > 28,537
