P. 18
4. Write the predecessor and successor of the following numbers.
(a) 23,080 (b) 45,199 (c) 4,98,998 (d) 5,00,899
5. Iden fy the smallest number from the given group of numbers.
(a) 25,744; 25,946; 25,648; 25,725
(b) 3,72,250; 3,72,060; 3,72,170; 3,72,210
(c) 8,95,520; 8,95,725; 8,95,830; 8,95,723
(d) 4,42,141; 5,42,141; 6,42,141; 4,41,148
Forming Numbers
We can form many numbers using the given digits by arranging them in diff erent orders.
• To form the largest number, arrange the given digits in descending order.
• To form the smallest number, arrange the given digits in ascending order.
Example 11: Form the smallest and the largest 6-digit numbers using the digits 9, 3, 4, 3,
7 and 5.
Solu on: The smallest 6-digit number formed is 3,34,579 and the largest 6-digit number
formed is 9,75,433.
Example 12: Form the smallest and the largest 6-digit numbers using the digits 3, 2, 0, 5
and 8 by repea ng the digit 3 twice.
Solu on: The smallest 6-digit number formed is 2,03,358 and the largest number
formed is 8,53,320.
Note that in the above example the smallest 6-digit number starts with the second smallest
digit, i.e., 2. It is because 0 has no value in the beginning of a number and 0,23,358 is a
5-digit number.
Even and Odd Numbers
Numbers ending with 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 are called even numbers. Numbers ending with 1, 3,
5, 7, or 9 are called odd numbers.
For example, 238; 1,746; 43,280; 9,37,632 are even numbers and 413; 685; 7,981; 2,9377
are odd numbers.
Exercise 1.3
1. Write the smallest and the largest 5-digit numbers that can be formed using the
given digits.
(a) 7, 4, 3, 1, 8 (b) 5, 0, 2, 8, 3 (c) 9, 1, 6, 2, 0 (d) 8, 0, 7, 0, 4
