Comparison of Numbers
We already know how to compare numbers up to four digits. Now let’s learn how to
compare numbers with fi ve or six digits.
Comparison of Numbers with Different Number of Digits
If two numbers have diff erent number of digits, the number with more digits is greater.
Example 6: Compare 1,34,791 and 28,264.
Solu on: Step 1: 1,34,791 is a 6-digit number whereas 28,264 is a 5-digit number.
Step 2: 6-digit number > 5-digit number. So, 1,34,791 > 28,264.
Comparison of Numbers with the Same Number of Digits
Example 7: Compare 7,92,843 and 8,07,643.
Solu on: Compare the face values of the le most digits, i.e., the digits at the lakhs
place in both the numbers.

To compare numbers
8 0 7 6 4 3 having the same number
of digits, always start
7 < 8 comparing from the
leftmost digit.
Since 7 < 8, therefore 7,92,843 < 8,07,643.
Example 8: Compare 8,70,654 and 8,72,721.
Solu on: The face values of the digits at the lakhs and ten thousands places are the
same in both the numbers. So, compare the face values of the digits at the
thousands place.

Fill in the boxes with < or >.
8 7 0 6 5 4 (a) 2,96,725 2, 96,752
8 7 2 7 2 1 (b) 1,00,901 1,01,901
(c) 1,11,110 1,11,010
Same 0 < 2
(d) 5,05,099 8,05,099
Since 0 < 2, therefore 8,70,654 < 8,72,721.
Similarly, we can compare the face values of the digits at the tens and ones places to know
which number is greater.
