Addition and Subtraction of Lengths
To add or subtract lengths, we write the given units in diff erent columns separately.
Arrange the given values under these units, and then add or subtract.
Example 5: Add 9 m 56 cm and 13 m 78 cm. m cm
1
1
Solu on: Step 1: Arrange the given values under the 1 9 5 6
correct columns of units.
+ 1 3 7 8
Step 2: Add the cen metres fi rst.
2 3 1 3 4
56 cm + 78 cm = 134 cm = 1 m 34 cm
Write 34 under cen metres and carry over 1 to the metres column.
Step 3: Add the metres along with the carry over.
9 m + 13 m + 1 m (carry over) = 23 m
Write 23 under metres.
So, the sum of the given lengths is 23 m 34 cm.
Example 6: Subtract 45 m 98 cm from 73 m 62 cm.
m cm
Solu on: Step 1: Arrange the given values under the correct
6 12 1 5 12
columns of units. 7 2 1 6 2
7 3 6 2
Step 2: Subtract the cen metres fi rst.
– 4 5 9 8
Since 98 is greater than 62, it cannot be
2 7 6 4
subtracted. So, borrow 1 m from 73 m.
Thus, 73 m – 1 m = 72 m.
So, 62 cm becomes 1 m 62 cm, i.e., 100 cm + 62 cm = 162 cm.
