ACTIVITY
What To Do?
To calculate perimeter and area of squares and rectangles using a geoboard
What We Need?
Geoboard, rubber bands, a paper and a pencil
How To Do? 1 unit
Place rubber bands around
the nails to form squares and Geoboard
rectangles of diff erent lengths.
Remember that the length of
the line connecting two nails on
the geoboard is equal to 1 unit
small square
and the area of one small square
is equal to 1 square unit.
Form squares and rectangles of diff erent
lengths as shown.
Calculate the perimeter by adding the
lengths of all the sides of the shape formed. Rectangle
Calculate the area of the respective shape by
counting the number of squares it can cover.
Perimeter of rectangle = 4 + 2 + 4 + 2 = 12 units
Area covered by rectangle = 8 square units Square
Perimeter of square = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8 units
Area covered by square = 4 square units
Repeat forming more squares and rectangles of diff erent lengths and fi nding
their perimeter and area.
