                     Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to learn:
 about the measurement of length, weight and capacity.
 conversion of units: metres to centimetres, grams to kilograms, litres to millilitres and
                           vice versa.
 to solve word problems involving length/distance, weight/mass and volume/capacity.
 estimation and verification of length, weight and capacity.

We have already learnt in the previous class how to measure length using standard units,
and how to measure weight and capacity using non-standard units. The metric system is
the most commonly used system for measuring length, weight and capacity all over the
                    world.

Let’s learn how to measure length, weight and capacity.
                    Measurement of Length

Measurement of length helps us to know how long, short, tall and far objects are. It is
measured in cen metres, metres and kilometres. The basic unit used to measure length
is metre and it is denoted by m.

We use cen metres to measure objects of smaller and shorter lengths. For example,
length of a book, pencil and eraser is measured in cen metres. It is denoted by cm.

We use metre to measure length of a table, length or height of a room or a building.
We use kilometres to measure longer lengths like distance between two places. For
example, distance between Delhi and Agra is measured in kilometres. It is denoted by km.

                    Conversion of Units of Length

Units of length, i.e., cen metre, metre and kilometre can be converted from one form to
the other. Now let’s understand the rela onship between these units of length and learn
how to convert one unit of length to other and vice versa.

                    Metres to centimetres

                    We know that 1 m = 100 cm.

 To convert metres to cen metres, we mul ply metres by 100.
 To convert metres and cen metres to cen metres, we mul ply the metres by 100
and then add the cen metres to it.
