                      Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to learn:
 to construct multiplication tables using diff erent methods.

 to identify patterns in tables.

                    Multiplication

Mul plica on means adding the same number repeatedly. The result of
mul plica on is called the product. The symbol ‘×’ denotes mul plica on.

Let’s understand this with the help of an example.

Count the number of chimpanzees in each group.

                      2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10

Here, 2 is repeatedly added 5 mes.
This can also be wri en as:

                      5 mes 2 = 10

                    or 5 × 2 = 10

We can read it as 5 mes 2 is 10 or 5 twos are 10.

Similarly, in 3 × 6 = 18, 6 is repeatedly added 3 mes and 18 is the product. It is
                    read as 3 mes 6 is 18 or 3 sixes are 18.

                    Constructing Multiplication Tables

We can construct mul plica on tables using the given methods.

                     • By repeated addi on • By using grid pa erns

                     • By skip coun ng • By adding 1 to 10

                                                                                                                         73
