•   Bottling is the method in which food is heated and stored in glass
                        bottles or jars. Fruits are heated and mixed with large amount of sugar
                        to make jams and jellies before bottling.



                        HEALTH ALERT!



                       We should avoid eating uncovered and unhygienic
                       food. It may contain germs as it is sold on the
                       roadsides and streets. At home, we can cook our food
                       hygienically and protect it from fl ies and germs by
                       covering it properly.



                        TERMS TO KNOW

                         1.  Nutrients:The components in food that help our body to survive, grow and become strong

                         2.  Carbohydrates: Nutrients that give us energy to do work
                         3.  Fats: Nutrients that act as fuels to give us more energy and keep our body warm
                         4.  Proteins: Nutrients that are needed for building muscles, and growth and repair of our body
                         5.  Vitamins: Nutrients that help in protecting our body from diseases
                         6.  Minerals: Nutrients that help in the formation of bones, blood and teeth
                         7.  Roughage: Part of the food we get from plants that cannot be digested by our body
                         8.  Balanced diet: Diet that contains all the nutrients in balanced amounts, together with
                            roughage and water



                        QUICK LOOK

                          1.  All living things need food to survive and grow, to get energy to work and play, and to
                            protect themselves from diseases.

                          2.  Food contains components in it called nutrients. The major nutrients found in our food are
                            carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.

                          3.  Besides nutrients, roughage and water also form an important part of our food.
                          4.  Roughage has no food value but it helps in the proper functioning of the digestive system
                            by removing wastes out of the body.
                          5.  Water is essential for proper functioning of our body.
                          6.  A balanced diet is important for proper growth and development of our body.
                          7.  We should not waste food and should follow some steps to reduce its wastage.
                          8.  Food wastage can also be reduced by preserving it and preventing it from getting spoilt.
                            Drying, freezing, pickling, canning and bottling are some ways of preserving food.
