                                         Forms of Matter

There is a variety of things around us. They KEY CONCEPTS

diff er in their size, shape, colour and other
                                                                                   • Forms of matter and their
properties. But there are some common properties with examples

features like mass and space that are shared • Uses of matter in our daily life
by all things. • Diff erent forms of water

All objects have mass. Mass is the quantity

that tells us how heavy or light an object is. For example, eraser, sharpener and
scale are light in weight while book, bag and water bottle are heavy.

All objects occupy space. For example, clothes occupy space in the cupboard,
books occupy space on the table and you occupy space on the chair.

Anything that has mass and occupies space is called matter. It includes both living

and non-living things. Everything around us is matter.

Forms of Matter and their Properties

Matter exists in three diff erent forms or states. They are
                                                                                                   Did You Know!
solids, liquids and gases. Each state of matter has diff erent
                                                                                                All matter is made up
                    properties. of small particles.

                    Properties of solids

                    • They have a f ixed shape and size. The shape or
size of a solid can only be changed when it is

broken or cut by applying force.

                    • Solid substances do not fl ow.

                    • Some solids are hard while some are soft. Table,

chair, pen, pencil, fl oor and glass bottle are
a few examples of hard solids. Plastic bottle,
                                                                                          Some examples of solids
