Lattice Multiplication
In lattice multiplication, the numbers to be multiplied are written outside the lattice and
the products inside it. It makes multiplication easy by breaking the process into smaller
steps.
Example 10: Multiply 36 by 2.
Solution: Step 1: Draw a lattice of 2 columns and 1 row as shown. 3 6
The columns are for the multiplicand and the row
is for the multiplier. Write the multiplicand and 2
the multiplier as shown.
Step 2: Multiply 6 by 2 and write the product 12 as shown. 3 6
The tens digit is written above the slanting line 1 2
and the ones digit below the slanting line. 2
Step 3: Multiply 3 by 2 and write the product 6 as shown. 3 6
Since 6 is a single digit number, write 0 for the 0 1 2
tens place above the slanting line and 6 below it. 6 2
Step 4: Add the numbers diagonally.
3 6 3 6 3 6
0 1 2 0 1 2 0 0 1 2
6 2 6 2 6 2
2 6 + 1 = 7 2 7 2
Write the sums obtained as the answer. Start from the left and move towards
the last digit, i.e., 072 or 72.
So, 36 × 2 = 72.
