Expanded Form and Standard (Short) Form
Expanded form of a number is the sum of the place values of its digits.
Consider the 4-digit number 8168. It can be written in the expanded form as shown below.
8168 = 8000 + 100 + 60 + 8
It can also be written in the expanded form in words.
8168 = 8 thousands + 1 hundred + 6 tens + 8 ones = 8 Th + 1 H + 6 T + 8 O
Similarly, if the expanded form of a number is given, its standard (short) form can be
written by writing the face value of each digit in the correct place.
For example, 7000 + 500 + 30 + 2 can be written in short form as follows.
Expanded form Standard form (Short form)
7000 + 500 + 30 + 2 7532
Example 4: Write 5 thousands + 3 hundreds + 8 tens + 1 one in standard form.
Solution: 5381
Example 5: Write 4653 in expanded form.
Solution: 4000 + 600 + 50 + 3 or 4 Th + 6 H + 5 T + 3 O
