Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to learn:
• 4-digit numbers (up to 9999).
• place value and expanded form of numbers.
• counting of numbers in different ways starting from any number.
• comparison of numbers and arranging them in ascending and descending order.
• formation of largest and smallest numbers (with or without repeating digits).
In this chapter, we will first learn to form numbers.
On adding 1 to the largest 1-digit number, we obtain the smallest 2-digit number.
1 + 9 = 10
Similarly, on adding 1 to the largest 2-digit number, we get the smallest 3-digit number.
1 + 99 = 100
The greatest 3-digit number is 999. Let’s see what happens when we add 1 to it.
+
9 hundreds (900) + 9 tens (90) + 9 ones (9) + 1 one (1)
9 hundreds (900) + 10 tens (100) Top Tip
If 1 is added to the
largest number in series,
we get the smallest
number of the next series.
For example, on adding
1 to 99, we get 100 and
on adding 1 to 999, we
10 hundreds = 1 thousand (1000) obtain 1000, and so on.
So, 999 + 1 = 1000 is the smallest 4-digit number.
