Forming 4-digit Numbers (with or without repeating digits)
We can form different numbers using the given digits by changing their place values and
arranging them in different orders.

• To form the smallest 4-digit number, arrange the given digits in ascending order.

If one of the digits is 0, place it at the hundreds place as 0 in the beginning has no
value.

• To form the largest 4-digit number, arrange the given digits in descending order.
Example 9: Form the largest and the smallest 4-digit numbers using 6, 3, 0 and 5 without

repeating any digit.
Solution: On arranging the digits in descending order, the largest 4-digit number formed
is 6530.

On arranging the digits in ascending order, the smallest 4-digit number
formed is 3056.

Example 10: Form the largest and the smallest 4-digit numbers using the digits 4, 7 and 2
by repeating the digit 7 twice.

Solution: On arranging the digits in descending order and repeating the digit 7 twice,
the largest 4-digit number formed is 7742.

On arranging the digits in ascending order and repeating the digit 7 twice,
the smallest 4-digit number formed is 2477.
