Activity 3.12
Aim: To show that a solid expands on hea ng and contracts on cooling
Materials required: A metal ball, a metal ring, a burner
Procedure
• Take a metal ball and a metallic ring.
• Try to pass the ball through the metallic ring.
ir
iron ballon ball
Observa on: You will see that the ball passes through
the ring.
iron ring
iron ring
Procedure
• Now heat the metal ball for 5 to 6 minutes.
• Try to pass the ball again through the metallic ring.
Observa on: You will see that the ball cannot pass
through the ring.
Conclusion: This shows that expansion occurs on hea ng a solid.
When we cool the ball again, it will be able to pass through the ring. This shows that solid contracts on
cooling.
Activity 3.13
Aim: To show that a liquid expands on hea ng and contracts on cooling
Materials required: A test tube, some coloured water, a cork, a capillary tube, a waterbath
Procedure
• Take a test tube and fi ll it with coloured water.
capillary
• Close the mouth of the test tube using a cork.
glass tube
• Fix a capillary glass tube through the hole in the cork. The cork
tube should be dipped in water.
coloured
• Check and note the water level in the capillary tube.
water
• Now heat the test tube by placing it in a water bath.
Observa on: You will no ce that the level of the coloured water
rises in the capillary tube.
Conclusion: This shows that expansion of a liquid takes place on hea ng.
On further cooling the test tube, the level of water in the capillary tube decreases which shows that liquid
contracts on cooling.
