4. Taking S as centre and radius = 5.5 cm, draw an arc P
below line SI.
5. Taking I as centre and radius = 5 cm, draw an arc
intersecting the arc in step 4 at K.
6. Join PS, PI, KS and KI. S 8 cm I

Try These
5 cm 1. Construct a parallelogram MONK in which
5.5 cm
K MO = 5.5 cm, ON = 4.5 cm and diagonal
MN = 7 cm.
2. Construct a rhombus PURE with side PU = 5.2 cm
and diagonal PR = 6.8 cm.
Hence, SKIP is the required quadrilateral.
We can also construct a parallelogram given its 2 sides and a diagonal and a rhombus given
its side and diagonal.
EXERCISE 17.1
1. Construct a quadrilateral MINT in which MI = 2.9 cm, IN = 2.6 cm, NT = 3.1 cm, TM = 3.3 cm and the
diagonal MN = 4.1 cm. Measure diagonal IT.
2. Is it possible to construct a quadrilateral FAST with FA = 3.5 cm, AS = 4.5 cm, ST = 6 cm,
TF = 6.5 cm and the diagonal FS = 9.5 cm? If not, give reasons.
3. Is it possible to construct a parallelogram TANG with TA = 5 cm, AN = 3 cm and the diagonal
TN = 9 cm? Give reasons for your answer.

Construction of a Quadrilateral Given 3 Sides and 2 Diagonals
Example 2: Construct a quadrilateral RAIN in which RA = 6 cm, RN = 5 cm,
IN = 7 cm and diagonals RI = 7 cm and AN = 7.5 cm. 5 cm 7 cm
Solution: Construction: Draw a rough sketch of the figure to be 7.5 cm
constructed. R 7 cm I
6 cm
Steps of Construction: Rough sketch A
1. Draw a line RI (diagonal) = 7 cm.
N
2. Taking R and I as centres with radii equal to 5 cm and
7 cm respectively, draw an arc above line RI intersecting
at point N. Join NR and NI.
5 cm 7 cm
3. Again, taking R and N as centres and radii = 6 cm and 7.5 cm
7.5 cm respectively, draw an arc below line RI 7 cm I
intersecting at A. Join RA, NA and AI. R
6 cm
Hence, RAIN is the required quadrilateral. A
