(a) 6,213 – 4,103 (b) 3,254 – 1,052 (c) 7,836 – 4,915 (d) 8,906 – 984
3. Find the missing digits.
(a) Th H T O (b) Th H T O (c) Th H T O
5 1 3 ? 8 7 ? 8 7 4 3 6

Solving Word Problems
Example 7: A train carried 3,499 passengers on the fi rst day and 4,659 passengers on the
second day. How many more passengers did in the train carry on the second
day?
Solu on: Number of passengers the train carried on the second day y 5 15
4 6 5 9
= 4,659
– 3 4 9 9
Number of passengers the train carried on the fi rst day
1 1 6 0
= 3,499
Number of more passengers train carried on the second day
= 4,659 – 3,499 = 1,160
So, the train carried 1,160 more passengers on the second day.
Example 8: The sum of two numbers is 5,437. If one number is 2,275, what is the other
number?
Solu on: Sum of two numbers = 5,437
3 13
One number = 2,275 5 4 3 7
Other number = Sum – Given number – 2 2 7 5
= 5,437 – 2,275 = 3,162 3 1 6 2
So, the other number is 3,162.

an addi on fact.
