Step 3: 2,000 + 500 + 40 + 1 = 2,541
So, 8,795 – 6,254 = 2,541.
Checking Subtraction
To check subtrac on, we add the diff erence of the two numbers to the subtrahend. If
the sum is the same as the minuend, the subtrac on is correct. If not, then there is some
mistake in the subtrac on.
Example 4: Subtract 7,254 from 8,106 and check your answer.
Solu on: Th H T O Checking: Th H T O
10 1
7 0 10 8 5 2 Diff erence
8 1 0 6 Minuend 1
+ 7 2 5 4 Subtrahend
– 7 2 5 4 Subtrahend
8 1 0 6 Minuend
0 8 5 2 Diff erence
Since the sum is the same as the minuend, the subtrac on is correct.
Finding the Missing Digits
We can fi nd the missing digits in a problem on subtrac on by considering the place values
of the digits and using the given formulae.
Diff erence + Subtrahend = Minuend, and Minuend – Diff erence = Subtrahend
Example 5: Find the missing digits.
Top Tip
Th H T O
To fi nd the missing
? 6 ? 2 digits, always start from
ones place and then
– 5 ? 4 1 move towards the left.
2 3 4 ?
Solu on: Step 1: Look at the ones column. Th H T O
2 – 1 = ? ? 6 ? 2
2 – 1 = 1 – 5 ? 4 1
So, write 1 in the blank space. 2 3 4 1
Step 2: ? – 4 = 4
Th H T O
To fi nd the missing minuend in the tens
column, add the subtrahend to the diff erence. ? 6 8 2
4 + 4 = 8 (subtrahend + diff erence = minuend) – 5 ? 4 1
So, write 8 in the blank space. 2 3 4 1
