                     Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to learn:
 to subtract numbers (up to four digits) with or without borrowing.
 to subtract numbers using expanded form.
 to estimate the diff erence between two numbers.
 to solve word problems involving subtraction in real-life contexts.
 to solve problems involving addition and subtraction together.
 to frame word problems based on a mathematical statement on subtraction.

We have learnt how to subtract 1-digit, 2-digit and 3-digit numbers in our previous classes.

Let's learn how to subtract 4-digit numbers.

                    Subtraction of Numbers (without borrowing)

To subtract numbers, we fi rst subtract the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds, and so on.

                    Example 1: Subtract 3,263 from 4,978.

Solu on: Step 1: Subtract the ones. Step 2: Subtract the tens.

                                            8 – 3 = 5 7 – 6 = 1

                                             Th H T O Th H T O

                                                4 9 7 8 4 9 7 8

                                            – 3 2 6 3 – 3 2 6 3

                                                              5 1 5

Step 3: Subtract the hundreds. Step 4: Subtract the thousands.

                                            9 – 2 = 7 4 – 3 = 1

                                             Th H T O Th H T O

                                                4 9 7 8 4 9 7 8

                                            – 3 2 6 3 – 3 2 6 3

                                                    7 1 5 1 7 1 5

                                  So, 4,978 – 3,263 = 1,715.
