P. 46
Example 9: Frame two word problems for 8,750 – 2,375.
Solu on: 1. A factory manufactured 8,750 pairs of jeans. If 2,375 pairs of jeans were
sold out, how many pairs of jeans were le ?
2. Mr Jha had ` 8,750 with him. He spent ` 2,375. How much money was
le with him?
Addition and Subtraction Together
When a problem contains addi on as well as subtrac on, we fi rst add the numbers that
do not have minus sign ( – ) in front of them. Then add the numbers that have a minus sign
and fi nally fi nd their diff erence.
Example 10: Solve 1,129 + 5,372 – 4,013 – 215.
Solu on: Sum of add the numbers that do not have a minus sign in 1 1
1 1 2 9
front of them = 1,129 + 5,372 = 6,501
+ 5 3 7 2
6 5 0 1
4 0 1 3
Sum of the numbers that have a minus sign in front of + 2 1 5
them = 4,013 + 215 = 4,228 4 2 2 8
9
4 10 11
6 5 0 1
Diff erence between the two sums = 6,501 – 4,228
– 4 2 2 8
= 2,273
2 2 7 3
So, 1,129 + 5,372 – 4,013 – 215 = 2,273
Example 11: There are 350 students in the junior wing and 850 students in the senior wing
of a school. Find the total strength of the school. If 84 students leave the school
at the end of the academic session, how many students are le in the school?
Solu on: Number of students in the junior wing = 350 1
3 5 0
Number of students in the senior wing = 850
+ 8 5 0
Total number of students in the school = 350 + 850
1 2 0 0
= 1,200
Number of students who leave the school = 84 9
1 10 10
Number of students le in the school = 1,200 – 84 1 2 0 0
= 1,116 – 8 4
So, 1,116 students are le in the school. 1 1 1 6
