Adaptations in Plants
Plants grow almost everywhere on the earth. KEY CONCEPTS
Some plants grow on land while some in water.
• Adaptations in diff erent habitats
They diff er greatly in their habitats. Thus, they
• Adaptations in terrestrial plants
show adaptations that help them live and grow
• Adaptations in aquatic plants
in their particular habitats. • Some interesting adaptations in
plants
Let’s learn about how plants growing in diff erent
habitats develop various adaptations to survive.
Adaptations to Diff erent Habitats
A plant adapts itself according to the climatic conditions of its habitat. The factors that
infl uence the adaptations in plants are mentioned below.
• Temperature of the place
• Amount of rainfall and sunshine received
• Availability of water
• Type of soil
Based on adaptations to diff erent habitats, plants can be divided into two groups. They
are terrestrial plants and aquatic plants.
Adaptations in Terrestrial Plants
Terrestrial plants are the plants that grow on land. They can be further divided into
diff erent categories based on their adaptations to suit the particular area in which they
grow. Plains, deserts, hills, marshy places and coastal areas are the terrestrial habitats
where particular type of plants can be found.
Plants growing in plains
Plains are the fl at and large areas of land. In plains, the climate is warm or hot in summers
and cold in winters. The amount of rainfall received in plains also diff er. Some parts of
the plains receive heavy rainfall while others receive less rainfall.
