TERMS TO KNOW

                         1. Habitat: The place where particular type of plant or animal normally lives

                         2. Adaptation: Changes brought about in structure, function or behaviour of a living being
in order to improve chances of its survival in a specifi c environment
                         3. Terrestrial animals: Animals living on land

                         4. Arboreal animals: Land animals living on trees
                         5. Aestivation: A sleeping pattern of some animals like snails and lizards in which they sleep
                             during summers

                         6. Hibernation: A sleeping pattern of some animals like bears and snakes in which they sleep
                             during winters
                         7. Aquatic animals: Animals living in water

                         8. Amphibians: Animals living both on land and in water
                         9. Aerial animals: Animals that fl y

                         10. Herbivores: Plant-eating animals
                         11. Carnivores: Flesh-eating animals

                         12. Omnivores: Animals that eat both plants and fl esh of other animals

                        QUICK LOOK

                        1. Animals have developed features which enable them to cope with the changes in the
                            environment.

                        2. An adaptation is a change in structure, function or behaviour by which an individual
improves its chances of survival in a specif ic environment.
                        3. The animals that adapt themselves to their environment survive. The ones that are not
able to adapt die and slowly become extinct.
                        4. Animals are adapted to the habitat they live in, for the food they eat and for protection
                            from their enemies.

                        5. Animals are grouped as terrestrial, aquatic, amphibians, aerial and arboreal on the basis of
                            their habitats.
                        6. Animals can be herbivores, carnivores or omnivores depending upon their food.
                        7. Animals escape from their enemies using diff erent techniques like camoufl aging.

                        8. Animals play an important role in our lives.
                        9. Absence of any living being may cause imbalance in nature. Therefore, we should be
concerned about protection of all plants and animal species.
