• Trees growing in plains with less rainfall shed their leaves
in autumn and bear new leaves in spring. These trees
are called deciduous trees. Sheesham and teak are some
deciduous trees.

• Trees growing in plains with heavy rainfall do not shed their
leaves. Instead, these trees keep replacing their old leaves
with newer ones and appear green throughout the year.
These trees are called evergreen trees. Mango, bamboo
and ashoka trees are some evergreen trees.
• Plants found in plains have many branches and leaves.

Plants growing in deserts
Deserts are very large areas of land that receive very less rainfall. The soil in desert is
sandy. Plants growing in deserts are adapted to survive in the presence of least amount
of water. They have the following adaptations to survive in deserts.
• Leaves are modifi ed into spines and thorns to prevent loss
of water.
• Stems of these plants are green, and thus, perform
photosynthesis. They also store food and water for the
plant.
• Cactus, date palm and aloe vera are some examples of
desert plants. Cactus, a desert plant
Plants growing on hills
Hills or mountains are the higher areas of land. They are colder
than plains. Snowfall usually occurs in winters on mountains.
Trees growing in these areas adapt to live in cold conditions
and show the following adaptations.
• Trees have thick barks. They are usually tall, straight and
cone-shaped. This allows snow to slide off their branches
easily. Trees on mountains
