At home
• Grow plants where they can get suffi cient sunlight.
• Water the plants of your garden daily.
• Do not step on young plants.
• Add manure to the soil to make it suitable for plant growth.
• Maintain enough space in between two plants while growing them.
At public places
• Do not pluck fl owers and leaves of plants.
• Do not write on the tree trunks by scratching on it.
If you take care of plants, they will take care of you!
TERMS TO KNOW
1. Taproot: The single main root that grows straight downwards from the base of
the stem
2. Fibrous root: Root that has a number of thin roots growing in all directions from
the base of the stem
3. Shoot: The parts of the plant that grow above the ground
4. Lamina: The fl at or broad part of a leaf
5. Veins: A number of tiny channels in the form of lines that run over the leaf’s
surface
6. Petiole: A structure that links the leaf to the plant’s stem or branch
7. Petal: The soft and brightly coloured part of a fl ower
8. Sepal: The green part of a fl ower that lies under the petals
9. Seed coat: Tough and hard outer covering of the seed
10. Embryo: The baby plant inside the seed
11. Cotyledons: The part of the embryo within the seed of a developing plant
12. Monocot seed: Seed that contains only a single cotyledon inside it
13. Dicot seed: Seed that contains two cotyledons inside it
14. Germination: The process by which a seed grows into a new plant
