Functions of the leaf

                    • Most of the leaves are green in colour due to Did You Know!
the presence of a pigment called chlorophyll.

photosynthesis. Therefore, we also call leaves ‘the food factories’ of the plant.

                    • Leaves help in the exchange of gases between the surroundings and the plant.

                    • Some plants like cabbage, lettuce and spinach store food in their leaves.

                        TIME TO REVISE

Write (T) for true and (F) for false statements.

                        1. Leaves that grow from the stem or branch holds the plant upright
                            and straight.

                        2. Leaves are green in colour due to the presence of chlorophyll.
                        3. The line running in the middle of the leaf is called the leaf blade.

                        4. The part of the plant that grows below the ground is called root.

                    Flowers

Flowers are the most colourful part of the plant. They grow petal
on the stem. They diff er greatly in colour, shape and size.

The soft and brightly coloured part of a fl ower is called sepal
petal. It produces scent to attract or keep away insects. The
green part that lies under the petal and supports it is called

sepal. It provides protection to the fl ower in bud stage.
                                                                                                   Parts of a fl ower
                    Functions of the fl ower

                    • It develops into fruit in most of the plants. Did You Know!
